The land of black-necked cranes in Bhutan, Phobjikha also known as Gangtey Valley is a flat valley that offers a unique landscape of Bhutan. Unlike other valleys and villages surrounded by verdant greenery, Phobjikha is a vast space with wildlife only in its northern part. The valley is also popular for being home to numerous species of birds including the rare black-necked crane that attracts a huge number of bird lovers and nature enthusiasts. With an altitude of more than 2900, above sea level, the valley of Phobjikha offers a splendid view of the surrounding valley making it a must-visit place in this region.
Situated on the hilltop, Gangtey Goemba is one of the biggest Nyingmapa monasteries of Bhutan. Perched at a height of 2,800m the monastery holds rich cultural significance to the local people.
Situated on the eastern side of the valley, the temple is considered to be one of the oldest monuments of this region. Built in the early 15th century, this temple houses the statues of past, present and future forms of Buddha and is considered a sacred place among Buddhist people.
Phobjikha is known for being home to numerous bird species and Black Necked Crane Information Centre is the best place to learn more about the birding of this valley. The centre houses information related to black-necked cranes along with equipment to spot the beautiful birds.
This is a 17th-century temple built by the Tibetan lama Tshenden Dawa which to date houses the ancient scriptures and artifacts of the bygone Bhutanese era. The temple houses numerous statues featuring the various forms of Buddha.
