Considered one of the most charming villages in the country, Bumthang has been able to emerge as a popular tourist site that boasts its beauty with small valleys, verdant hills and majestic Dzongs. Apart from natural beauty, Bumthang is popular for its rich culture, textile industry and cheese making. The valley is situated within a lush green forest area featuring numerous off-road trails ideal for indulging in trekking and hiking activities. Mebartsho or the burning lake is the major attraction of this place believed to be the home to hidden treasures of Guru Rinpoche.
Built in the early 7th century, Jambay Lakhang is one of the 108 monasteries built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. The Buddhist temple was established to remove evil spirits from the Himalayan kingdom.
Believed to have the body prints of Guru Rinpoche inside the cave, the Buddhist temple is among the most sacred sites of Bumthang. Built in the year 1652, this is one of the most popular sites to visit in this region.
Popularly known as the ‘Castle of 'White Bird’ by the locals, the Dzong used to serve as the wall of defence for the east-central region of Bumthang. The Dzong is home to numerous monks and serves as the administrative centre of Bumthang.
Situated in the Bathpalathang region, the Bumthang Brewery is known for producing the famous Swiss-style Weiss Beer also known as ‘Red Panda Beer’. Most alcoholic drinks are made from local ingredients using authentic methods. Apart from this, the place is also famous for producing Swiss-style cheese which is considered one of the major food ingredients in Bhutanese cuisine.
Mebartsho mostly known as the Burning Lake is the most sacred lake of the Bumthang. It is believed that a famous Buddhist saint has found all the hidden treasures of Guru Rinpoche in this lake which devotees visit in huge numbers.
